Today’s feature cones from @morearmadillos taken at 5438 N. Clark in Andersonville & chosen by @relaxocat. Hi this is Fayth, I wanted to let you know that this “ghost sign” is among one of Chicago’s oldest and most pristine. The oldest photo found of this building dates back to 1916 (found at the Library of Congress Archives), and apparently sometime in the 1920’s the sign was hidden by the construction of another building. Last fall that building was demolished, re-revealing the sign. “Relieves Fatigue” is seen on the left - small amounts of cocaine were an ingredient up until 1929 and initially Coke was sold as a medicinal drink. “Sold Everywhere 5 cents” - Coke remained at this price for 70 years starting in 1886. One of the reasons it stayed at that price was because their vending machines only took nickels, and altering the machines to accept dimes would have meant a 100% price hike. Anyway, there are plans for construction of another building at this site, so this sign may be gone again soon. Shoot it while you can!
